Yellow gold is back in style for high-end luxury watches. New watch models from TAG Heuer, Vacheron Constantin, Hublot, and Cartier feature traditional yellow gold for the first time in three decades, reports The New York Times.

Cartier has introduced its Panthère woman’s watch in 18-karat yellow gold with a black lacquer dial. A size small model of the watch retails for a cool $23,000. For men, Cartier has revived a 1917 design of its Tank Normale watch in yellow gold. The price: $46,000.

“We definitely see a trend toward yellow gold again, our boutiques are seeing it, and it is global, and both men and women are buying it,” Cartier’s Director of Image, Style, and Heritage Pierre Rainero told The Times.

Hublot in 2022 offered 10 new watches in yellow gold. “That collection was very well received,” Raphael Nussbaumer, Chief Product and Purchasing Officer of Hublot said. “Now we are seeing a lot of interest on the part of consumers for yellow gold and will continue to offer it.”

Yellow gold watches have gotten a boost from Hollywood. In the hit film “Barbie” Ryan Gosling wears yellow gold TAG Heur watches.

TAG Heuer recently unveiled its Aquaracer Professional 200 and Carrera Chronograph in 18-karat yellow gold, both retailing for more than $20,000. “We can see clearly there’s a demand from clients for solid gold pieces,” TAG Heuer’s Heritage Director Nicholas Biebuyck told The Times. “It is really about taking inspiration from the past and bringing it into the future.”

In the 1990s, rose gold—a combination of gold and copper— and pink gold—a mix of gold with copper and silver—became popular among watch buyers.

The yellow gold that is now gaining prominence among luxury watches is, of course, not pure gold because the precious metal is too malleable to be used for watchmaking. Vacheron Constantin uses a mix of 75 percent gold, 12.5% silver and 12.5% copper. “We love yellow gold because it is a color that can really make our watches shine,” said Christian Selmoni, Vacheron Constantin’s Director of Style and Heritage.
