As the son of a 19th-century railroad engineer, James Earle Fraser was able to experience the western American frontier firsthand. His childhood recollection of Native American scenery is greatly reflected in his now famous artwork. The highly detailed portrait of a Native American man on the obverse side of the coin and the powerful sculpting of the North American Bison on the reverse were chosen to showcase the beauty of the western frontier. By 1913, the immensely popular “Buffalo Nickel” was ready to mint. James Earle Fraser succeeded in becoming one of the 20th century’s greatest sculptors and artisans. Fraser’s later works include medals – such as the World War I Victory medal and the prestigious Navy Cross – and several monuments erected in locations across the nation.
